The main engineering grades of copper-nickel alloys were developed for naval condenser and seawater pipework applications. Once their unique combination of high levels of resistance to corrosion, good thermal conductivity and low macro-organism attachment in marine environments was recognised, it led to applications in offshore oil and gas, shipbuilding, desalination and power generation.

Applications for copper-nickel alloys can include condensers, coolers and other heat exchangers, onboard seawater desalination plants, systems for compressed air, sanitary systems, bilge, ballast water, brine, fire mains and sprinklers, fuel oil, lube oil, warm water heating, grey and black water, hydraulic lines and tank heating.

For welding copper-nickel to steel, 65% nickel-copper consumables are used so that the weld metal can absorb more iron dilution from the steel without cracking than copper-nickel weld metals. When brazing, silver–based brazing alloys should be used rather than phosphorus-bearing ones. No heat treatment is necessary after welding.

Copper-nickel alloys have excellent resistance to marine corrosion. The two main alloys are 90/10 and 70/30. The 70/30 is stronger and has greater resistance to seawater flow; but the 90/10 will provide good service for most applications and, being less expensive, tends to be more widely used.
